What is a consumer unit, and why does it matter?
Your consumer unit — what most people still call the fuse board — is the point where electricity comes into your home and gets distributed to individual circuits. It's also where the safety protection sits: the breakers that trip when something goes wrong.
Older boards often use rewirable fuses rather than modern circuit breakers, and many lack the RCD protection now required under current regulations. That protection cuts the power in milliseconds if there's a fault — the difference between a minor incident and a serious one.
Beyond safety, an outdated consumer unit is a flag. Mortgage surveyors will note it. Insurance companies may ask about it. It's rarely an emergency, but it's one of those things that tends to surface at the worst possible moment — mid-sale, mid-remortgage, mid-renewal.

How long does a consumer unit replacement take?
Most jobs are completed in a single day. Smaller properties are often done in half a day. We'll give you a realistic timeframe when we quote.
Will the power be off the whole time?
There will be a period with the supply off while the changeover takes place. For most residential jobs this is between two and four hours. We'll plan it around you where possible.
Do I need to apply for building regulations approval?
No. Because Nursteed is NAPIT registered, we notify Building Control directly as part of completing the work. You'll receive a certificate that confirms compliance — nothing else to arrange on your end.
What if my board was flagged on an EICR?
If a C1 or C2 code was raised against your consumer unit on an electrical inspection, replacing it resolves the issue. We can carry out the replacement and provide a new certificate to show the remedial work has been completed.
Is it worth replacing if I'm selling?
Almost always yes. Surveyors flag old boards routinely, and it can affect mortgage offers. Getting it sorted before listing removes the risk of it becoming a sticking point later in the sale.
